Brain Training Works Better Off the Screen, and the Research Explains Why

Brain training apps reliably make you better at the exercises inside the app. The harder question is whether that sharpness travels into the rest of your life. This article looks at what the research says about seated brain games, what changes when you add physical movement, and why doing both at the same time appears to work best of all.

The honest case for and against brain games

First, the fair version of the story. Practicing memory puzzles, speed games, and attention drills does improve your scores on those puzzles, games, and drills. That is real learning, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying it.

The catch is what researchers call narrow transfer. Improvement tends to stay close to the trained task. Getting faster at a matching game on a tablet does not automatically make you sharper in a busy supermarket, because the supermarket asks your brain to do its thinking while your body is navigating the world. A quiet couch and a touchscreen never rehearse that combination.

What movement adds

Physical exercise has its own well documented benefits for the aging brain, from blood flow to mood to sleep. So an obvious idea suggests itself: if mental exercise helps and physical exercise helps, do both. The interesting research question was never whether to combine them, but how. Should you do your brain training and your walk separately, or at the same time?

At the same time beats taking turns

A 2021 network meta-analysis in Ageing Research Reviews, a study design built to rank competing approaches against each other, compared the options across randomized trials in older adults. Simultaneous training, meaning cognitive and physical exercise performed together, came out as the most effective approach for overall cognition. It outperformed doing the two separately, and it outperformed either one alone.

Head-to-head trials point the same way. In a 2014 multicenter randomized trial, older adults who added computerized cognitive training to a strength and balance program improved their reaction time, executive function, and divided attention more than a group doing the identical physical program alone, and their fear of falling and fall rates improved too.

Why walking is the natural place to do this

If simultaneous training wins, the practical question becomes where to fit it. Walking is the answer hiding in plain sight. It is the physical activity most adults over 55 already do, it needs no equipment, and it happens in the real conditions your brain actually needs to handle: uneven pavement, background noise, other people.

A walk also solves the screen problem. Training through your ears instead of your eyes means your head stays up and your attention stays on the world, which is exactly the situation the training is meant to prepare you for.
